It could be that you are trying to connect something only fit to interact with Windows devices, such as NTFS. Not every external drive is optimized for Macs. If the external drive is visible in Disk Utility, select it and click Mount, which should make it visible on the desktop and in the Finder menu. You’ll find Disk Utility within System Preferences or via Spotlight. On these newer Mac models, NVRAM settings are being checked and reset automatically when necessary. Note that NVRAM works differently on Apple Silicon Macs and doesn’t require manual resetting. Hopefully, the hard drive has shown up now.
